What you did as a kid is unfortunately not uncommon, but you grew up! It’s heartbreaking to hear that things turned out the way they did with Stephen. This entry is a valuable lesson that everyone needs to read. We’re happy to hear that you chose to channel that guilt and shame to do something positive, and help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Everybody makes mistakes and does things that we later regret. What we’ve learned through friendship and acceptance is that there’s nothing like hearing a simple and honest “I’m sorry” from the person that hurt you, no matter what the action was — this allows for everyone to move past it and bring some closure, even if it means you never speak again.

Put your work into action, and know that you always have a friend in Best Buddies, and in the community that you support.

Never underestimate the power of forgiveness and acceptance.
